As part of its proactive approach to student wellbeing, your school has implemented the SchoolTV Academy Youth Wellbeing Course, a practical initiative designed to translate mental health awareness into meaningful action. In a world where young people face increasing social, academic and digital pressures, equipping them with clear, practical skills to recognise, respond to and seek support for wellbeing challenges has never been more important.

Through this course, your child has developed greater confidence in acting with empathy, building trust and encouraging help-seeking behaviours that extend beyond friendships to wider relationships within the school community. The learning is designed to strengthen students’ ability to support others responsibly while also understanding their own limits.

Through this course, your child has developed the following practical and lifelong skills.

 

The Conversation Hump - R.E.A.C.H. Framework

Recognise

Students learned how to identify signs that a friend may be struggling. These may include withdrawal, mood changes, increased stress, irritability, risk-taking behaviour, disengagement or noticeable shifts in social patterns. Early recognition allows support to happen before concerns escalate.

Engage

Students practised how to approach a peer in a calm, respectful and non-intrusive way. They learned how to choose appropriate timing, ask open-ended questions and create a safe opportunity for someone to talk

 

Acknowledge

Students developed skills in listening without judgement, validating emotions and avoiding minimising someone’s experience. Feeling heard is often the first step toward feeling supported.

Communicate

Students learned communication strategies that help keep discussions constructive and balanced. The focus being on clarity, calm language and mutual understanding, ensuring both students feel heard while maintaining appropriate boundaries. This approach reduces confusion, avoids escalation and supports conversations that move toward reassurance and appropriate next steps.

Help

A critical component of the course is understanding when and how to involve a trusted adult. Students learned that responsible peer support includes encouraging help-seeking and recognising situations that require professional or adult intervention.

 

Additional Learning Outcomes

Understand personal boundaries

Students explored the importance of not carrying concerns alone. Supporting a friend does not mean solving the problem independently.

Build confidence and responsibility

The course strengthened communication skills, empathy and responsible decision-making. These skills extend beyond peer support into leadership roles, family relationships and future responsibilities.

Receive formal accreditation

Upon completion, students received an accreditation certificate recognising their achievement and commitment to responsible peer support. This may support applications for roles involving responsibility such as babysitting or sports coaching.

Continue the conversation at home

Families play a vital role in reinforcing this learning. Asking your child what they found most valuable and discussing when to seek adult support helps consolidate these skills and build long-term mental health literacy.
