When a young person ends their life, it
can increase the risk of suicide for other
vulnerable young people.
International research has identified a
phenomenon known as suicide contagion,
where a person’s knowledge of or exposure
to a suicide may increase the likelihood of
them attempting or dying by suicide. Young
people can be particularly susceptible to this
because of their developmental stage and
social structures.
It’s therefore crucial that schools respond to
a death by suicide with care and planning.
